Riding mower intermittently dies

I am a new member and would appreciate any help available. I have a 1992 Dynamark mower (model d4316) with a 16 hp b&s vanguard engine. It has ran perfectly until recently when it has begun to die intermittently. It will always immediately restart, and run smoothly from 5 seconds to 10 minutes before it dies again. Because it runs and dies so smooth I am assuming it is an electrical problem. Have good fuel to carb. When it dies, it's like you turned the key off with no sputtering, just shuts off. Have checked switch, solenoid and safety switches and all have checked o.k. Is it possible that it could still be one of these mentioned, possibly only breaking down intermittently, or do I need to look toward the engine at coil or something else? Once again, thanks for any help possible.

Raptor 52 idler spring

The idler spring shot off of my Raptor 52. I can't find it in the field. My nearest Hustler dealer doesn't have parts at their location which leaves me with an hour plus drive to get the spring. My local mower place couldn't find a cross for it or a spec on the length. Can someone take a measurement for me so I can potentially get a quick easy replacement? I can order a new OEM cheaply online but can't wait for it to arrive.

Thanks

Pioneer 60" problem

I have a Pioneer 60" with the kohler 24hp(I think) motor. I got on it yesterday to mow and noticed when I turned the key to the on position I could hear a sizzling sound then saw some smoke. I tried cranking it but it wouldn't start but turns over fine. I found the 20amp fuse was blown so I replaced it, it blew in about 3 seconds. I took the shield off the top of the motor to see if I could see what was going on, if I unplug the coil on the drivers side of the machine it doesn't blow the fuse but as soon as I plug it in it blows it. The plug has a small melted spot on it. Anyone ever had this problem? All the wires under the shield look good and there is no corrosion on the plugins. Thanks for any help.

I decided to hire an extra person to have more help during the week. I am just not sure how to make this work correctly. She is ready to work and never argues with me. Always on time. Problem is that she still needs to learn some things. She can use the Exmark 30" just fine (except on steep hills) and she can do some good lines. With some practice she will get better. I just don't know how to make her use a trimmer quickly. She is rather slow on the trimmer. Any tips or tricks on how to make her better and faster? Also explaining her how to blow correctly.

Here is a picture of her work. Not too bad if you ask me.

How-to: Restore Fuel Stained/Faded Paint

I've been asked a few times in my mower repair thread how I bring the luster back to paint that's in pretty bad shape. Well today I took some extra time to photography more of the process on a particularly troubled mower and share it with you.

The Tools:

  • Car Wash
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Hose or...
  • Pressure Washer (optional but makes life much easier)
  • Cordless Drill
  • 3M Scratch Removal Kit or equivalent. This kit comes with a drill attachment and two buffing pads. This pad is actually from a wheel restoration kit I got super cheap. Either will work.
  • Rubbing Compound - I use Meguiar's Ultimate or 3M. Both are high quality products.
  • Clean rags. Microfiber towels are ideal, but as this isn't a show piece, shop towels or even good paper towels will serve our purpose.

For severe stains:

  • Soapy water
  • 1500-2000 Grit sand paper

The Mower:

It's a 2011 Yard Man 11A-A18M055.

This is the newest mower I've worked on so far. Picked it up for free in exchange for some scrap metal. Cleaned the fuel tank and carburetor out, replaced the plug and she fired right up.

Once the mower is functional, the next step for me in to clean it up and make it look presentable.

Step one is to pressure wash the crud off of the deck, followed by a scrubbing of car wash and water. Car wash is better for the paint than dish soap. I usually have a cheaper brand of car wash for the mowers (and the good stuff for my cars!).

After its cleaned up, we can more clearly see the condition of the paint.

We can see fading, scratches, and damage caused by gasoline.

In most instances the next process will be sufficient.

With the deck clean and dry, put a dab of rubbing compound on the buffing pad.

Place the pad on the deck and move it around to spread the compound before turning the drill on. Slowly spool the drill up to prevent slinging.

Work back and forth over an area, applying light pressure. Do not hold the drill in one place for long or apply excessive pressure.

Wipe rubbing compound off with a clean cloth, do not allow it to dry.

Repeat as necessary until desired effect is achieved. Note that rubbing compound will not remove excessively deep scratches, but it will remove light scratches, swirls, and oxidation.

For areas that the buffer can't get to, apply some compound to a clean cloth and buff by hand. You'll get the same results, it'll just take more elbow grease.

Now in this case, the mower must have gad quite a bit of fuel spilled on the deck and then sat there until it evaporated, as the damage is quite severe. Under normal circumstances rubbing compound will be enough. but in this case, more drastic measure were required. In fact, this is the first time I've had to wet sand a mower to bring the paint back, but it didn't take too long and the results speak for themselves.

With that said most renewal won't require this step, but since I did, I'll go over it.

Put some water in a buck with a bit of soap in it. this will act as a lubricant. Place a piece of 1500-2000 grit sandpaper in the bucket and let it soak for a few minutes. I used 1500 grit because that's what I had and it'll cut through the paint more quickly.

Get the area you plan to work on wet, and gently sand it. Apply more soapy water frequently to keep the sandpaper lubricated.

Ideally, you want to do this in a circular motion with light pressure, but that's not really possible in this area, so i went back and forth with light pressure.

Using 2000 grit after will net a better finish, but to be honest it wasn't needed for the the area I was working with.

Once the damaged paint/severe oxidation has been removed, rinse the area off and dry it.

Here's where the magic happens: Apply a dab of rubbing compound to your buffer pad or in this case cloth (as the buffer can't access this area) and work the compound in. Wipe the compound off with a clean cloth and repeat as necessary until you achieve the desired result.

And there you have it! It doesn't take too long and the results are well worth it. By taking a little extra time to restore the finish on the mower, it looks far more valuable to a potential buyer, or if its your own, it looks much nicer in your garage!

The finished product (with some paint touch up on the engine).

33 Generac - No compression, but passes Leak Down test

Thanks in advance.

I have a 33 Generac giving some fits. Just replaced the cylinder heads, valve train, and head gasket. Compression on both cylinders is down around ~50 psi. These engines spec at 185+ ish. Here's the kicker, I can pass a leak down with less than 15% leakage at TDC using 90 psi. I get *some* blow by into the crank case, but nothing out of the ordinary. I can hear the air from the dipstick tube, but can't feel much air at all. Slight air past the valves, I can feel a little air on the back of my hand with the valve cover off.

Started to think the cylinder wall was warped or out of spec, but what's the chances of both cylinders being equally bad at the same time? My next step is to run the leak down with rocker arms disconnected to ensure valves are closed and then rotate engine to get a leak down reading from TDC to BDC.

Any other thoughts here?

Have a good evening.

6 hp BS on an Ariens mower. Can I adjust the RPM?

I have a fixed RPM mower. The rpm's seem lower than they used to be, and it is not sending the cut grass into the rear bag as well as it used to.
I just sharpened the blade, and it made no difference.
Can I increase the RPM?
I'm fairly handy with motors, so if I thought I could, I'd give it a shot.

Repairs Regent 16hp doesn't start only backfires

The first 2 mowings of the year the tractor started but acted like it had a vapor lock. Continued to crack until engine turned over and started spewing a bunch of fuel out. It would run very rough after 5 minutes of mowing and then die in a cloud of smoke. 3rd mowing outing started the same way but would not throttle up to full power. I've removed, cleaned and replaced the carburetor now. Put in a new fuel filter, and verified fuel gets into fuel bowl. At this point it won't start and backfires after 30 sec of cranking. Please help with tips of what to check next.
